No. The residence hall contract is legally binding for the academic year, which runs through the spring semester. The only exception is for students who are not enrolled for the spring semester, are graduating, transferring to another university, or will not be returning to TAMIU. Students not planning on returning to the university for the spring semester must cancel their reservations in writing and submit it to the Residence Life Office. The deadline to cancel for the spring semester is December 1. Can I live on campus even if I’m taking less than 12 hours? Yes. There is not a minimum number of hours required to live on campus. Any current student can live on campus. Likewise, students who are enrolled in less than 12 hours are not exempt from the university housing policy. How do I get my deposit back? All students currently living on campus who do not reapply to live on campus for the upcoming semester automatically receive a refund of their deposit, if they do not have any outstanding fees with the Residence Life Office and they do not have any damages to their room when they check out. The refund will be mailed to your permanent address within four to six weeks after the student moves out. If the student wants to live in the residence hall, but changes his/her mind, they must cancel their reservation in writing and submit it to the Residence Life Office. My friend and I are coming to TAMIU next semester and we want to be roommates, what do we do? We need to make you aware that while we make every attempt to grant each and every roommate request, it is never a guarantee. To increase your chances of being assigned together, you and your friend should submit your residence hall contracts together in the same envelope. If you each submit a note letting us know that your roommate choice takes precedence over your room choice makes it easier for us to accommodate your request. Can I live off campus for the summer? The university does not require students to live on campus during the summer sessions, but you do have the option to live on if you need the housing. Are all the halls co-ed? No. There are all female floors, all male floors, and 2 co-ed floors by suite. How long are the beds? What kind of sheets will the student need? All the beds in the residence halls are 80-85 inches long twin beds. You do not need extra long twin sheets to fit the bed. Are pets allowed? No. Pets are only permitted in the residence halls as guide animals for the physically challenged. Fish are allowed, but are to be kept in a fish bowl or tank containing no more than 10 gallons of water.
Can furniture be removed from the room and replaced with my own? No. The furniture provided is permanent. The furniture may not be removed. When will students find out their housing assignments? The majority of housing assignments for new students will be mailed to home addresses around mid-July. This mailing will include the name and contact information of the roommate as well as information about move-in day.
What does a student do if he or she doesn’t like the assignment? We regret that we are unable to accept requests for change of assignment once assignments are mailed out. We do make a change request process available to students during the third week of fall quarter. When does the residence hall open in the fall? Saturday, August 20, 2005 is the scheduled move-in date for the fall semester. If arrangements need to be made to move in earlier, please contact your Residence Hall Manager. The number of days needed before the 20th of August will determine if the student will be charged. Can students bring bikes and where can they be stored? Yes. Bikes are permitted on campus. Bikes can be stored inside the student’s room or on various bike racks located throughout campus. Is carpeting provided in student rooms? Yes, the rooms are carpeted except for the area near the entrance of the room and the sink/bathroom area. How often are rooms cleaned? Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms and cleaning up after themselves in common areas. Main hallways and lounges are cleaned daily by the University Custodial Staff. Can students make long distance calls from their rooms? Yes, either by dialing 1-800 numbers or by using a calling card. Where can students do the laundry? There are washers and dryers, which take quarters, and are available for use 24 hours a day by residential students. The washers and dryers are located in Building 5 of the RLC. What banks are available on campus? There is no bank on campus, but there is an ATM machine which is located inside the Student Center. This ATM machine is serviced by Internation Bank of Commerce. Do the residence halls have computer labs? There is a computer lab in the RLC Building 5 which is available to students during posted hours. If you have your own computer, you may register your computer with the Office of Information Technology and they will work with you to get the internet turned on in your room, free of charge.
